Muharram 2020 - History of Muharram, Significance and Celebrations of Muharram in India

Day of Ashura, is considered most important by Shia and Sunni Muslims. Shia Muslims observe it as a day of mourning to commemorate the death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson, Hussain Ibn Ali. According to legends, Imam Hussayn once objected to caliph Yazid's legitimacy and revolted against him. The objection not only led to Karbala's battle and the beheading of the revolutionary leader but also imprisonment of his family on the day of Ashura in 680 AD. Sunni Muslims believe that on the 10th day of Muharram the religious leader Moses led Israel through the Red Sea and got victory over Egyptian Pharaoh and his army of war chariots. There is another belief

How do people Celebrate Muharram?

Both Shia and Sunni Muslims observe Muharram; however, not in the same manner. For Shia Muslims, it is a day of observance and not joy, hence, they mourn for the ten days. They attend special meetings at mosques, dress in black, and even refrain from listening to their favorite music. They also do not attend events such as weddings. On the 10th day of Muharram, street processions take place where they walk barefoot, chanting and whipping their chests until it draws blood to remember the sufferings of Imam Hussayn. Sunnis observe this day by fasting from the first to the tenth or eleventh day of the month, and the ones who fast are believed to be rewarded by Allah.

Facts about Muharram

The Arabic term 'Muharram' means forbidden. Muharram is one of the four sacred months mentioned by Allah in the Quran and Rajab, Dhu al-Qi’dah, and Dhu al-Hijjah. These four months are regarded as sacred because it was during these months that Allah told about the creation of the universe in the Quran.

Allah says in the Quran regarding the sacred months:

“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah the day he created the heavens and the earth; of these four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them.” At-Tawbah 9:36

It was during Muharram when the first moon was sighted after the Prophet migrated to Medina.

The tenth day of Muharram is regarded as the Day of Ashura. Ashura means “tenth” in Arabic. It is a month of remembrance and mourning for modern Shia Muslims. Shias remember Ashura to observe the murder of Hussein ibn Ali, the grandson of Muhammad.

For the Shiites, the first night of Muharram until the day of Ashura, are the days in which Imam Hussein and his followers were killed by the army of Yazid I at the Battle of Karbala where the remaining survivors were captured and brought to Damascus.

According to the Muslim scriptures, the death of Prophet Muhammad divided the Muslim world because Muhammad’s descendant Yazid ruled incorrectly. Hussein being the third Shiite Imam and second son of Ali refused to swear allegiance to Yazid. He was killed, and his martyrdom is regarded as sacred.

Since 680 A.D, Hussein's death became the most important communal ritual for Shiites.

According to Ibn Abbas, it was during Ashura when the Holy Prophet migrated to Medina and found the Jews fasting during this day to commemorate the day when Musa (Moses) parted the Red Sea to help them escape from slavery in Egypt.

Some common misconceptions about Ashura include the day of Adam’s creation, the birth of Ibrahim (Abraham), an unlucky month due to the Battle of Karbala, and the time for doomsday.

Reliane Jio's 'Happy New Year 2018' plans have gone live from today. Jio's Rs 149 recharge offer will come with 1GB data per day for 28 days validity. Here's a detailed look

Reliance Jio’s ‘Happy New Year 2018’ plans will come into place from today. Jio has effectively slashed prices of some plans, while it is offering more data on others. The Rs 149 recharge plan from Jio will now offer 1GB data per day for 28 days, which makes it one of the cheapest plans in the market with 1GB daily FUP. The new plans are reflected in Jio’s recharge section of the website and the app.

In comparison Airtel and Vodafone have plans at Rs 199 and Rs 198 respectively with 1GB daily data and unlimited free calls. Here’s a quick at Reliance Jio’s new data plans. The company has also indicated it will likely make more changes to its plans, giving customers better than current deals.

Reliance Jio Rs 149 plan
First, Reliance Jio’s Rs 149 monthly plan now comes with 1GB daily data for 28 days, which is effectively 28GB data. Earlier the plan included only 4.2GB data with 0.15GB data as the daily FUP limit. In Jio’s case once a user exhausts the daily data limit, the speed is reduced to 64 Kbps, which is not really 4G speed.

According to Jio, it has reduced the price of the Rs 199 plan to Rs 149. The current Rs 199 plan offers 1.2GB data per day, which comes to 33.6GB data for 28 days. Overall Jio’s Rs 149 plan with 1GB daily data makes it cheaper compared to rivals Airtel, Vodafone, etc.

Reliance Jio Rs 399 plan
Reliance Jio’s Rs 399 plan will now have a validity of 84 days, up from 70 days. With 1GB data per day, this means the plan is offering 84GB data in total for customers. Jio has effectively slashed the price of Rs 459 plan by Rs 50 and made it the new Rs 399 plan. The original Rs 399 plan with 1GB data per day and 70 days validity now costs Rs 349.

Reliance Jio Rs 449 plan
The telecom player has also reduced the price of its Rs 499 plan to Rs 449. This plan has a validity of 91 days with 1GB data per day, which means a total of 91GB data. Once again calls, both local and those made on roaming are free and unlimited, along with free SMS.
Reliance Jio’s 1.5GB data packs: Rs 198 and higher recharge packs
Also Jio has upgraded some of its earlier packs to give customers 1.5GB data instead of the older 1GB limit. The Rs 198 pack is the cheapest in the list with 1.5GB data per day, which comes to 42GB for the 28 day validity. This is again much more than what Airtel and Vodafone are offering in their Rs 199 and Rs 198 plans.

Jio’s Rs 398, Rs 448 and Rs 498 plans will now all come with 1.5GB data on board. This means the first plan will come with 105GB data as the validity is 70 days, while the second plan has 126GB data given it has 84 days validity. The most expensive pack in this list, which is Rs 498 comes with 91 days validity, which comes to 136.5GB data in total.

Once bitten, twice shy: Akhilesh Yadav says alliance talks with Congress a waste of time

Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday said his priority was strengthening the party organisation and he was not thinking of an alliance ahead of the "crucial" 2019 general elections.

Terming the process of talks and seat negotiations a waste of time, the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister, who had tied up with the Congress for the assembly elections in 2017, ruled out alliances "as of now".
"The 2019 election is certainly crucial as the message from Uttar Pradesh will go out to the entire country. As of now, I am not thinking of an alliance with any party. It (alliance talks and seat negotiations) wastes a lot of time and I don't want to be in confusion (over seats)," Yadav told PTI in an exclusive interview.

πŸ‘‰ CLICK HERE MORE BOLLYWAD NEWS

Yadav said he was working on strengthening the party's vote bank. Suggesting that the party could bargain at a later stage if an alliance materialises, he said his style of politics is different and he is open to "friendships" with like-minded parties. However, his priority at present was to strengthen the organisation of the party.
The SP-Congress combine was trounced in the 2017 state elections, with the BJP and its allies winning 325 seats in the 403-member House. While SP got 47 seats, the Congress won seven.
"There is time before the elections. The Lok Sabha polls are in 2019. We are presently working on each seat, going through local equations for selection of candidates," he said.

πŸ‘‰ CLICK HERE MORE ENTERTAINMENT NEWS

Yadav also announced that the SP would contest the Lok Sabha polls where its organisation was strong.
"We have a strong organisational base in Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh. We are also working in Uttarakhand and Rajasthan," he said.
Discussing the defeat of his party in the 2017 assembly polls despite claims of good development, Yadav said the BJP had succeeded in fooling the people.

"It was not our vote bank but that of the Bahujan Samaj Party that shifted... The people still remember my regime and are now realising their mistake."
He added that the people gave BJP a chance but the party had fulfilled none of its tall promises.
"The Yogi Adityanath government has failed... They are just carrying forward our work by putting their plaques," he alleged.
In his view, the Adityanath government should demand a big package from the Centre in the budget instead of fooling the people.

"Out of 80 seats, the state has given them 73 MPs (including that of Apna Dal). It's high time the Yogi government demands a big package from the Centre as Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be presenting his last budget next month.
"After the budget, nothing can be done. If you don't have funds, you can't work," he said.
The former chief minister said he would be taking out a "rath yatra" across the state to mobilise party workers.

"We demand that before the Lok Sabha polls, the two by-elections of Gorakhpur and Phulpur be held using ballot papers. Doubts about the machine should be cleared."

"The route and plan are being chalked out. I will be hitting the road again. People have expectations from us as SP is the only party which can stop the BJP."

Yadav also spoke on the issue of electronic voting machines (EVMs).

On the much-touted UP investor summit, preparation for which is underway, Yadav taunted the government and said it should first purchase chairs for the venue, the JP international centre, which was constructed during his regime.
"Will they ask the delegate to sit on chairs borrowed from a tent house?" he asked.

Riots over Dalits' Koregaon-Bhima battle anniversary celebration in Pune kills 1, destroys 50 cars

At least one person was killed and over 50 vehicles destroyed after a clash broke out between local groups and Dalits celebrating the Koregaon Bhima battle anniversary.

An event marking the 200th anniversary of the Koregaon Bhima battle in Pune yesterday ended on a bad note after riots broke out at a Dalit rally, killing at least one person.
Reports have it that some right-wing groups in Pune had expressed opposition to celebration of the "British victory". Violence broke out after a local group got into an argument with a crowd on its way to the Koregaon Bhima battle memorial in Shiroor tehsil.Riots at the Koregaon-Bhima battle anniversary event. Source

Incidents of stone-pelting and vandalism were also reported.
"Stone-pelting started after the argument. During the violence, some vehicles and a house in the vicinity were damaged," a PTI report quotes a police officer deployed for security at Bhima Koregaon.

One person was reported to have died in the violence. His identity and how exactly he died is not known yet.
Police stopped traffic on the Pune-Ahmednagar highway for sometime following the incident, bringing the situation under control.

More police personnel, including companies of the State Reserve Police Force, have been deployed," the officer said.
Section 144 had been imposed around the Koregaon Bhima park in Pune as a precautionary measure before the riots broke out.
After the riot, 49 people were booked on the charges of violence and arson.

WHY VIOLENCE BROKE OUT OVER THE KOREGAON-BHIMA BATTLE ANNIVERSARY
The Koregaon Bhima battle (aka Bhima Koregaon battle) was fought between the British East India Company and the peshwa's army at Koregaon Bhima on January 1, 1818. In it, the British faction had defeated the peshwa.
Dalit leaders commemorate the British victory as it is believed that soldiers from the Mahar community -- then considered untouchable -- were part of the East India Company's forces.
However, some right-wing groups opposed the celebration as it was for the "British victory".

Earlier in the day, Dalit leader and independent MLA from Gujarat Jignesh Mevani visited the war memorial in the village. Mevani had also attended Elgaar Parishad held in Pune to commemorate the battle.
Meanwhile, Union Minister of State for Social Justice Ramdas Athawale demanded police protection for Dalits in the wake of the violence.

"Dalit groups visiting Bhima Koregaon were stopped at Sanaswadi near Koregaon. Stones were hurled at them. No police force was available for their protection," Athawale said in a statement

He appealed to Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to deploy additional police force in the village and provide protection to the members of local dalit community.

The Army is totally geared up to face any situation in the Doklam sector and any mischief will be dealt with “properly”, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command Lt. Gen. Abhay Krishna said on Saturday.

He was asked about China reportedly stationing its troops in Doklam, where the two countries were locked in a standoff for over two months earlier this year after the Chinese army tried to build a road in the area claimed by Indian-ally Bhutan.
would allow China to cut off its access to its northeastern states. The standoff ended in September after the two countries mutually agreed to withdraw their troops from the area.
Stating that he would not name anyone specifically, Lt. Gen. Krishna said the Indian Army is in high spirits and ready to take on any mischief.
“We are totally prepared, geared up; let anybody do any mischief and he will get it back nice and proper,” he told reporters here.
Lt. Gen. Krishna was speaking at the Eastern Command headquarter at Fort William here after a wreath-laying ceremony on ‘Vijay Diwas’ to commemorate India’s victory over Pakistan in 1971, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh.

The road building effort by China and presence of its troops at the tri-junction between India, China and Bhutan had led to an eyeball-to-eyeball face off between New Delhi and Beijing for 73 days from June 16.
Reports have said that China still has troops stationed a few hundred metres from the tri-junction in Doklam sector.
Asked if the reports were verified, Lt Gen Krishna said a lot has been stated about them and he has nothing more to add.
“The Indian Army is always in very high spirits, we are always ready to take on any mischief by anybody. I am not going to name anybody specifically.
“Territorial integrity is ingrained in our blood and for that we will go to any extent to ensure the territorial integrity,” he said.

Exit polls predict BJP victory in Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh elections

NEW DELHI: The BJP is expected to win the Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh elections, according to various exit polls conducted by media organisations.

Almost all the exit polls have predicted that the BJP will retain Gujarat and is expected to get more than 100 seats. The BJP is in power in Gujarat for more than two decades.

In Himachal Pradesh, a state with high anti-incumbency where the electorate has chosen the Congress and BJP alternately in Assembly polls, the exit polls projected a clear majority for the saffron party, unseating the Virbhadra Singh-led Congress government.

Today's Chanakya gave BJP 135 seats in Gujarat and predicted 47 for the Congress, 14 less than its tally in the current Assembly. The exit poll also predicted a vote share of 49 per cent for the BJP and 38 per cent for the Congress party.

In the 182-member Gujarat Assembly, a party needs 92 seats to form the government. In the 2012 Assembly polls, the BJP had won 115 seats while the Congress managed to get 61 and others six.

India TV-VMR survey also forecast a BJP win, with the party likely to clinch anywhere between 108 and 118 seats. The Congress, it said, could win 61 to 71 seats. The survey said the BJP could garner 48 per cent of the votes polled, the Congress 41 and others 11 per cent.

In Himachal Pradesh, the exit polls predicted the BJP's return to power with a comfortable majority.

The Times Now-VMR and Zee News-Axis exit polls predicted identical tally of 51 seats for the BJP in the 68-member Assembly. A party needs 35 seats for a simple majority in the House. The Times Now-VMR poll gave 16 seats to the Congress and one to other, while the Zee News-Axis poll forecast 17 seats for the current ruling party.

The Aaj Tak-Axis exit poll gave 47-55 seats to the saffron party, 13-20 to the Congress and 0-2 to others. Among other exit polls, the News X survey predicted 42-50 seats for the BJP and 18-24 for the Congress.
The CVoter predicted 41 seats for BJP and 25 seats for Congress in Himachal.

Congress had returned to power in Himachal Pradesh in 2012 pocketing 36 seats, marginally more than the half-way mark, while the BJP secured 26. The others had bagged the remaining six. The Congress was, however, skeptical about the predictions, with party spokesperson Shobha Oza saying exit polls have proved wrong in elections before, and claiming it will emerge victorious.
